The item people most often forget to pack is a charger—especially a phone charger. It’s easy to unplug at the last minute (or leave one on the nightstand) and assume it’s already in your bag. Once you arrive, that missing cord turns into a problem fast: boarding passes, ride-share apps, maps, hotel confirmations, and payment wallets all depend on a working phone.
Travel chargers are also deceptively “invisible” on packing lists because they aren’t worn, used at the beach, or packed in a toiletry kit. They live in outlets, in the car, or on a desk—places you’re not looking when you’re focused on swimsuits and sunscreen.
Chargers get left behind because they’re usually in use until the moment you walk out the door. Unlike clothing, they don’t get staged on the bed or folded into a suitcase. If you’re sharing a charger at home, you might also assume someone else already packed it. And if you have multiple devices, you may pack a cable but forget the wall adapter or portable power bank.
Make a small “tech pouch” that stays packed year-round: phone cable, wall adapter, power bank, and any extras like earbuds or a watch charger. Then, the night before you leave, swap your everyday charger into the pouch only if you don’t already keep a dedicated travel set. A quick final sweep of outlets—bedroom, kitchen, and bathroom—catches the most common misses.
If you’re headed to the coast, it also helps to pack smart for long days away from an outlet. For a complete checklist that covers sun, sand, and the little necessities that save a trip, see this beach vacation essentials guide.
Focus on sun protection (SPF, hat, sunglasses), water and snacks, a towel or blanket, and a way to keep valuables dry. Add a portable charger so your phone lasts through maps, photos, and dinner plans.
