Electric Fireplace Clicking? Causes and Quiet Fixes

How to fix electric fireplace clicking noise?

A clicking electric fireplace usually comes from a normal control relay switching on/off, a fan blade lightly tapping something, a loose panel that vibrates when the heater runs, or the flame effect motor/gearbox. The fix depends on when the clicking happens: only at startup/shutoff, only with heat on, or constantly during the flame effect.

1) Confirm when the clicking occurs

If you hear a single click when you turn heat or flame on/off, that’s often a relay and can be normal. Repeated clicking every few seconds, or clicking that gets louder over time, points to a mechanical issue or a struggling electrical connection that needs attention.

2) Power cycle and reset

Turn the unit off, unplug it for 2–5 minutes, then plug it directly into a wall outlet (not a power strip). If the clicking disappears, the unit may have been stuck in a protection mode or the strip wasn’t supplying stable power.

3) Tighten anything that can vibrate

With the fireplace unplugged and cool, check for loose screws on the back cover, side panels, and mounting brackets. A slightly loose metal panel can “tick” as the fan starts or as the heater warms and expands. Tighten snugly—don’t over-torque.

4) Inspect airflow and the heater fan area

Dust buildup can make the fan work harder and create rhythmic clicking. Vacuum the intake/exhaust vents and remove lint with a soft brush. If the clicking only happens with heat on, look for a wire tie, label, or insulation edge that could be brushing the fan path (do not modify internal wiring).

5) Check the flame effect components

If clicking happens with flame on but heat off, the flame motor or a slightly misaligned spindle can be the source. Gently reposition the unit so it sits level on the floor/stand; an uneven base can shift the flame assembly just enough to cause contact noise.

6) When to stop troubleshooting

If you notice a burning smell, intermittent power, rapid relay clicking, or the unit shuts off by itself, stop using it and contact the manufacturer or a qualified technician. Internal electrical repairs shouldn’t be DIY.

FAQ

Why does my electric fireplace make a rattling noise when the heat is on?

Rattling with heat is commonly caused by a vibrating panel, debris near the fan, or thermal expansion of metal parts. Unplug the unit, clean vents, and tighten accessible screws; if the noise persists or worsens, discontinue use and seek service.
