Can You Drive With a Coolant Light On? What to Do

Can I still drive with a coolant light on?

Usually, no. A coolant warning can mean your engine is overheating or that the coolant level is low. Continuing to drive may cause serious engine damage. Find a safe place to pull over, turn off the engine, and let it cool before you investigate.

The exact warning depends on your vehicle. A red temperature warning calls for immediate action; some vehicles also use a separate low-coolant light. If you are unsure which light you are seeing, treat it as urgent and consult your owner’s manual once you are safely stopped.

What should you do when the light comes on?

Move out of traffic as soon as it is safe. If you cannot stop immediately, turn off the air conditioning and turn the heater to its highest setting while you make your way to a safe stopping point. This is a short-term measure, not a reason to continue your trip.

Shut off the engine and allow it to cool completely. Do not open the radiator cap or a pressurized coolant reservoir while the engine is hot; escaping coolant and steam can cause severe burns. Steam, a strong sweet smell, or coolant pooling under the vehicle are reasons to call for a tow rather than drive farther.

Can you add coolant and continue?

Once the engine is cool, you can check the coolant level against the markings on the reservoir. If it is low, add the coolant type specified in your owner’s manual. Use premixed coolant or mix concentrate as directed; do not assume different coolant types can be mixed.

A low level may indicate a leak or another cooling-system problem. If the warning stays on, the temperature rises again, or you notice a leak, shut the engine off and arrange a tow. Even if the light goes out after topping off, have the system inspected promptly.

Our team recommends keeping the correct coolant and a pair of gloves in your vehicle for emergencies. For a closer look at warning signs and next steps, read our coolant temperature warning light guide.

FAQ

How long should I wait before checking coolant?

Wait until the engine and cooling system are completely cool, which can take at least 30 minutes and sometimes longer. Never remove a radiator cap or pressurized reservoir cap while it is still hot.
